What is Love?

Some people call it a miracle, some people call it a blessing but the reality is that the attraction between humans is just our instincts telling us to procreate. This feeling is created by a bunch of brain chemicals called Dopamine, Endorphin's, and Oxytocin, the same chemicals in the brain that are released when you do Cocaine or Heroin which is why some people call "Love" addicting. Dopamine is the happy molecule which boosts your mood and causes what is known as Euphoria. Endorphin's is the Opiate molecule which is also know as the feel good molecule, they say endorphin's is 74-86 times stronger than morphine! Oxytocin is the trust or love chemical because it is released between human interaction so that we are able to trust or "love" that person. This just shows us how easy it is into manipulating someone into "loving" you with chemicals. Love is a metaphor for chemicals that make us want to procreate.

FEED Part 3

  • "Finally, she moved the foot. She moved it slowly in circles. She breathed out really deep. Her eyes were closed, like it was sex." this is page 129, this text has two meanings to me, how determined and independent Violet is in these types of situations and how the feed is controlling people's bodies, any little thing happens to the feed and people are affected.
  • "We went to the sea, because there wasn't time after School™ to go under it. She and I went to stand beside it. We watched it move around. It was dead, but colorful." page 179, this really shows how everything is under trademark which is weird, and also how even though the sea was dead they still found beauty to it which to me doesn't make sense.
  • "Because her whole skin was cut up with these artificial lesions. We were all just looking at her. They were all over." page 191, this is the first time in the story that I heard people care about lesions, of course, this is the most serious case in the whole book. Also, this shows how they don't like hanging out with Quendy do to her lesions.

My Weekend

My weekend was terrible, my parents were always screaming at me to this and that... I seriously hated my weekend. My Friday wasn't so bad, I hung out with a friend in my house playing Call of Duty™, but that was the only good part. On Saturday night a friend came over to my house, but I happened to not be home at that time... I had invited him over and it sucked cause I wanted to hang out with him but my parents had to force me to get out of the house. All in all my weekend was terrible and I hope to never go through something like this again.

FEED Dialectical Journal #2

Quotes:

  • "My body-I was in bed, on top of my arm, which was asleep, but I didn't know where. I couldn't find the Lunar GPS to tell me." page 43, I believe this can apply to everyone in both a physical and mental way because he felt lost and so do we, he felt like he didn't belong there and most of the times we don't either.
  • "None of us of could get the tune "I'll Sex You In" out of our heads." page 51, this is important because not only were they left with their thoughts and a hacker controlling them but I believe this quote can also apply to us now, we are always being controlled by others and it is an ongoing torment that we can't escape from.
I think these quotes mean to me because they relate a lot to my life experiences, maybe not physically because I haven't been to the moon but more metaphorically.

FEED Dialectical Journal #1

Quotes;
  • "We went to the moon to have fun, but the moon turned out to completely suck. We went on Friday, because there was sh*t-all to do at home." He was tired and sick of what he was doing at home so he decided to escape to the moon but he hated it.
  • "There were a lot of people there for the break, and kids were all leaping up and down the halls and making their voices echo. It was a pretty crummy hotel, and there weren't enough sheets, and there was hardly any gravity, and no one had a fake ID so they put a lock on the minibar." This was on page 9 when he was describing his dislike for the hotel because they couldn't get drunk and the kids were making noise throughout the halls, he also complains the gravity is terrible there.
  • "Quendy came back from the bathroom and said,"Omigod! Like big thanks to everyone for not telling me that my lesion is like meg completely spreading." page 21, Quendy talks about a lesion like it is not good but she acts like it is normal and people should just ignore them because everyone has them.
  • "The girl turned around and looked at Quendy. She said,"The lesion isn't bad." page 22, Link asked a girl to see if she noticed anything in Quendy and to the girl the lesion was normal, this makes me wonder because to us now if we get a cut we don't worry much maybe because of more advanced technology but lesions are unthinkable and we would go straight to the hospital while they would just look at them and think nothing much of it.
He is indecisive about the moon because he hated it. He said he wanted to pass boredom but it didn't for him clearly.

My Opinions on Some Short Stories

The short stories that I have read so far in this unit are:
  • "At the Pitt-Rivers" by Penelope Lively
  • "The Moment Before the Gun Went Off" by Nadine Gordimer
  • "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin
  • "Goat's Tobacco" by Roald Dahl
  • "The Veldt" by Ray Bradbury
My favorite of these stories was "The Veldt" because I can relate to it, it has a powerful message to me that applies to basically everyone nowadays, that parents instead of dealing with the child’s problems will instead just give them a new iPhone or iPad to distract them. I also liked "Goat's Tobacco" because of its simplicity, I didn't personally connect with the story but I still liked it because of the fact that it was humorous but managed to be straight forward. I liked "The Moment Before the Gun Went Off", but because it was so confusing to understand if the man was guilty or not made me not appreciate it straight away. Once I understood it, I liked it. I don't know how to feel about "At the Pitt-Rivers" because it is showing the fact that the older generation can't teach us everything. Clearly the old man couldn't teach the teen how to find the "right" person or how to understand love. I disliked the fact that everything had a deeper meaning to it that you had to look for, like the whale. Personally "The Story of an Hour" was just plain confusing. I didn't understand who was dying and who wasn't, I was also confused about whether or not his wife actually liked him but I guess it was the fact that I wasn't able to relate to this story (because none of my close family members have died) that just made me not comprehend the plot.
